African Cream Music is an independent record label based in Johannesburg.
African Cream Music

African Cream Music is a South African record company that was established in 2001 with the aim of sharing the best African music with the world. They showcase some of the most talented musicians, artists and producers on the African continent.
The Start of the African Cream
After working in property development for many years, founder and CEO Alex Agulnik decided that creating a record label that celebrated African music was the best way to follow his passion. While involved with Digital Cupboard, the biggest Internet site in Africa at the time, Agulnik realised there was a huge international thirst for music from the African continent – and it needed to be quenched. And so, African Cream Music was born.
The Artists & Compilations
African Cream Music, through its acclaimed compilations, continuously strives to showcase top quality music, whether from established legends or promising youngsters. Hugh Masekela, Ladysmith Black Mambaza, Johnny Clegg, Miriam Makeba and The Mohatella Queens, Papa Wemba, Salif Keita, Oliver Mtukudzi, Angelique Kidjo and Cesaria Evoria are just a few of the renowned musical icons who are featured alongside hot new talents like Malaika, Mafikizolo, Simphiwe Dana, Brickz and Zola to name but a few. Producers include acclaimed veterans of the music scene like Thapelo Khomo, Wendy Oldfield and Andre Abrahamse. African artists signed to the label include mbube masters Amaryoni, afro-fusion stars Khumbula, Namibian reggae artist Ras Sheehama, the multi-lingual Latino from Mozambique and kwaito talent Choppa.
African Cream Music′s CD Series
The popular Trip series is a collection of stunning tracks from Africa. The Great South African Trip Volume 1 & 2 feature the latest and the greatest musicians and hits, while The Great East African Trip, The Great Pan African Trip and The Essential South African Trip are all atmospheric expressions of the rhythms of Africa. The Great North African Trip and The Great West African Trip are in the pipeline.
The Afronsoniq series offers contemporary cutting-edge sounds: expect lounge, funk and groove with a definite African edge in albums such as Ambient Afrique and The African Lounge Experience from producers such as Afronauts and Mpemba Effect. Award-winningThapelo Khomo produced The African Groove Experience by “Spha” Bembe.
The Mother Africa series includes riveting albums like Healing Sounds from Mother Africa by iconic musician Pops Mohamed, Gospel from Mother Africa, Marimbas from Mother Africa and Voices from Mother Africa.
The Jazz series boasts an eclectic collection of jazz greats and original standards from the masters: check out A cappella group Amaryoni′s Marabi Moments, for example.
The Drum Series includes African Drum Masters, Drummers from Mother Africa and Marimbas from Mother Africa, which all resonate deeply with the heartbeats of Africa.
African Cream Kidz, launched in 2006, is a popular series of albums containing children′s stories, songs and lullabies. Under African Skies with songs by Wendy Oldfield, Lullabies from Mother Africa, Singalong Kidz and Goodnight Songs from Tina Schouw are all part of the African Cream Kidz series.
Legendary UK based singer, Mica Paris, who is the patron of the UK charity KIN (Kibera in Need) is Nairobi to see the projects that the charity runs jointly with local organisation Riziki Kenya.

Mica will be joined in Kibera by acclaimed Kenyan gospel musician Jimmy Gait, and KIN Trustees from the UK.

Mica Paris is one of the UK’s finest and most respected female singers with a career full of Top 10 hit singles and albums worldwide.

She recently recorded a long-awaited new album of original material featuring renowned guest singers and musicians to be released later this year.

Most recently Mica has been honoured as an “Icon” at Windsor Castle by the Duke of Edinburgh and performed at his 90th birthday celebrations.

Jimmy Gait is a sought after gospel Kenyan artist; recipient of the Kisima and Groove Awards.

He is also a visionary and his Make IT or Make IT campaign seeks to motivate people to believe in success in whatever they do. Jimmy recently joined with Riziki Kenya to dig pit latrines for Kibera residents.

The musical duo will use a trip to Kibera this weekend to highlight conditions in the massive slum, and seek support for KIN/Riziki Kenya projects.

“It is indeed an honour to be a patron of this great cause. Our children are our future. Please join me in reaching out to give these children and their families, living in such desperate conditions, a chance of a better life,” said Paris.

An unlikely story stands behind the man known by many as “Lecrae”. From the southside of Houston to a leader in the movement of urban reform, a rocky road provides a window into the grace he experienced through out his life, with every situation molding him into the artist and leader that he is today.

Born and raised by his mother in a struggling community on the south side of Houston, Lecrae moved around to several places giving him the versatile background and cultural awareness he carries with him. San Diego, Denver, and Dallas have also once been home to him and the street life he once idolized and pursued. Along the way, like many in the inner city, he took to rapping as a way of communicating his mind. It wasn’t until after high school that his hobby became a passion after his hip hop background was redeemed by Jesus Christ.

At 19 years old at the encouragement of a christian leader he attended a conference and heard James White delivering the message. In that moment, sitting in a chair, his world was flipped upside down as the Holy Spirit convicted him of his sin and need for a Savior. That day Lecrae was rescued by the Lord and began following after Christ. Almost instantly his renewed heart spilled over as he printed his testimony and passed it out enthusiastically all over his college campus at University of North Texas. The next 5 years included many struggles and victories before he teamed up to begin Reach Records, releasing his first album at the age of 25.

Calling Dallas home, Lecrae remained content using his gifts of speaking and rapping while volunteering at a juvenile detention center, but the Lord would have different plans and soon he began working on his debut “Real Talk”. Pouring out a genuine discussion of life issues andpassionate, unashamed pursuit of Jesus Christ, Real Talk was released to the world where he quickly became noted as an emcee that would meet listeners where they were by delivering
transparent, relatable, and impacting messages.

As Lecrae continued to make his mark in the music industry, he realized the stage wasn’t enough. He wanted to see deeper impact in urban culture. There needed to be a culturally relevant and biblically solid resource center to help train the next generation. Co-founding ReachLife Ministries in 2005, the non-profit organization exists to partner with organizations to equip local leaders with culturally relevant tools and media projects designed to strengthen communities with the word of God. ReachLife is another vital piece in the larger vision of seeing a reformation in urban culture.

Since formation, Lecrae has released the groundbreaking album After
the Music Stops and the first Christian Rap CD to ever sit in the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Top Gospel Charts, Rebel. Led by the
classic single Jesus Musik, After the Music Stops slowly spread to the mainstream market with other hits such as Praying For You and Send Me. Aimed to build an audience of disciples, the album sat on Soundscan Christian Hip Hop/R&B chart for two years after releasing in 2006. While in the No. 3 position, Rebel released in 2008 and claimed the No. 3 position on the secular iTunes Rap chart.

A graduate of University of North Texas, Lecrae now resides in the
inner city of Memphis, one of the nations most violent cities. A movement is brewing around the country with hungry, unashamed believers popping up in inner city communities everywhere. Lecrae is humbled to be a part of leading others towards Christ so that lives can be changed forever just like his changed years ago. With new avenues and strategic partnerships Lecrae prays that the impact from Reach will spread far beyond simply the music and into the lives of believers across the world.

DNG, 2004 KORA AWARD WINNER (Best Male Gospel Artist Africa), the only Kenyan musician to bag a continental award in 2004, has had a rough road to stardom. DNG stands for ‘Disciple and God’, but my real names are Davidson Ngibuini. I chose this stage name because I want to be more like Christ in the way I live my life. I want to learn from Him. My music and ministry is all about Him. Born 17th May 1986 to a single parent, I am the only child in my family. Fatherless, my life has not been easy. I grew up in denial, looking for answers in all the word places: drugs, sex and alcohol- everything that you may consider moral filth. On July 31st 2003, I gave my life to the Lord and He began the transformation in my life.

MUSIC CAREER
I have loved music from a very young age, having been exposed to all sorts of music genres. When I finally ventured into music in January 2003, I started off with secular music till I got saved and shifted to gospel music. My music is a fusion of English and Kiswahili (which is the national language in Kenya). It is a mixture of R&B and Hip-hop in a local style, which in Kenya, we call ‘Kapuka’, and is youthful, lively and contemporary.

My first gospel song, ‘Samehewa’ is a testimony and features the vibrant vocals of an upcoming gospel musician called Kiki Mutungi. I have done a remix of the song with a local gospel group in Kenya called ‘Gospel Fathers’ and it is featured in their compilation CD called ‘Sina Madeni’. I am still working on my album and it is yet to be released. My music, being inspirational, rich and soul-searching aims at creating an impact and making a difference in people’s lives by influencing them through positive messages.

INSPIRATION
My greatest inspiration in my music is God. I am basically testifying how much He has done for me, and what He can do for you.
Another inspiration to my music is my life: experiences, challenges, struggles, trials and tribulations. I incorporate what I see or feel into my music. I have something to say and I am just looking for the platform to say it.

VISION
My vision is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to all peoples, and of all denominations. I aim to influence people to change through my music, lifestyle and my one-on-one interaction with people. I don’t want people to make the mistakes I made. I also aim at changing the stereotype that many people, especially the youth, have that Christianity is boring and it is just for the old folk. I want them to see, through my life, that you can still be young and be born-again, and still enjoy yourself, have clean fun and live your life to the fullest. Lastly, I aim at promoting decent music as opposed to songs laced with lewd and nasty lyrics. Music all over the world has been perverted as is seen as promoting immorality, sex and wicked behaviour. I aim at cleaning up the stigma around music, especially in Africa where the traditions and society are very conservative. It is high time we worked at getting rid of this tarnished image around music.

CHALLENGES
1.Finances- It has not been easy, but so far, God has provided. My mother is the sole financier of my music.
2.Poor distribution of our music both locally in Kenya and internationally. We artists have to distribute the music ourselves thus wasting time and energy we could have used to improve our music.

ACHIEVEMENTS
My greatest achievement is my God-given breakthrough in the music industry: I have been able to curve a name for myself, record songs, do a video, and even start my own clothing line. I have released my pre-album release tapes, which have received booming sales!! I have infiltrated the secular industry, something that is extremely difficult for a gospel musician to do in Kenya. I have had several live performances and have shared platforms with American Gospel music Awards nominees, Rufftone, SK-Blue, Sheila and Jogg C, Kisima Awards nominees, Gospel Fathers (with whom I have also done a collaboration with), 2004 East African Coca Cola Pop-stars, SEMA, The Homeboyz, Code Red, Kora Award Nominee Redsan and many others.

My songs have rocked the charts as is evident in the ‘mymusic.co.ke’ sales lists showing the top 10 hottest selling songs in Kenya!! In 2004, I was honored to receive several nominations to the first ever Groove Awards (Kenya’s first ever Gospel Awards) in the following categories: Best Gospel Video of the year, Best New Artist of the year and Songwriter of the year. Submitting my material to such a wonderful and awesome competition such as The Kora Awards is a great achievement in itself. I was nominated to the Kora Awards in the Best Male Gospel Artist category and won thanks to God!! DNG, now a household name, is clearly seen through the large amount of popularity I have gained thus far. This year (2005) I was nominated and won the Best Gospel Artist Award in the Chaguo La Teeniez Award in Kenya, an award decided by the number of votes by Kenyan Teenagers aged between 13 and 19 years old!

AMBITIONS
I plan to release my album this August (2005), expand my clothing line, make my music internationally renown and to even open doors for other up-coming musicians. I also plan to set a higher standard in the Gospel industry, taking gospel music to a place it has never been before. I also hope to get signed onto an International record label and get my music distributed all over the world!

Fred Obare was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya and after struggling a lot living a life without hope and a future, he finally found peace in his heart when he accepted the Lord Jesus as his personal savior.

He has been on a tour in the US, UK, Switzerland, Africa and other parts of the world since 2004 spreading the word and reaching out through his music and his gifts. He has had the privilege to curtain raise for renowned gospel artists like Benita Washington and Stephen Hurd. Fred has also ministered with different music teams like Generation 21, a ministry of Youth for Christ International and the Continental Singers a great American music ministry based in California.

In 2004, he released his first CD “Bwana U Mkuu” (“Lord You are Great”). This is a blend of eleven different styles of music and has the famous Luhya medley and the title track Bwana U Mkuu.

In 2005, Fred recorded his second album titled “Zaburi 1” (Psalm 1). This has the hit songs Zaburi 1, Wewe ni Bwana, Luo Medley & There’s no one like Jesus among many other great African praise and worship songs. The great African sound, the harmony, and the message on this album will encourage and lift up your spirits.

He has just finished recording his new CD “Nisamehe” (Forgive me) in the beginning of 2008. Nisamehe (Forgive me) has 13 great songs and 5 different languages; English, Spanish, Swahili, Luo and Lingala. The other great thing on this album is the different styles and genres. The CD has; urban gospel, old time traditional gospel, Contemporary jazz, Lingala, Traditional African praise and worship and also contemporary praise and worship. As a praise and worship leader, Fred has always wanted to do something new and fresh that he’s never done before. The bible says to sing unto the Lord a new song and this album sure has a lot of great new songs.

The Lord has also called Fred into recording, producing, arranging music and teaching musical instruments like the guitar, bass and piano. He has been able to produce a few other artists and church groups in Kenya, Tanzania and the United States including Rose Muhando’s new hit song Nibebe. He also wants to reach out to the young upcoming artists that are struggling and help produce for them great quality music. He is married to Mercy and they are currently based in Birmingham, Alabama.
